Good For You Food Pantry

Access to affordable, healthy food is a critical social determinant that can greatly affect physical and mental health outcomes, especially in children. According to county data, 22% of Tarrant County households and 36% of Dallas households have no vehicle and live more than a mile from a grocery store or supermarket; more than 800,000 people across Tarrant, Dallas, Denton, and Collin counties experience food insecurity; and more than 25% of children in North Texas are food insecure.
Traditional food pantries generally offer nonperishable, processed foods. The Good For You Pantry program is focused on supplementing those efforts with fresh fruits and vegetables, along with other healthy staples, often culturally relevant for the community each pantry serves. Some pantries also offer diapers and toiletries. Families choose the items they take home, just as when they shop in a store.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books (also known as BoB) is the annual districtwide reading competition in Fort Worth ISD. Every year around one thousand 3rd-12th grade students participate in a two day event held at TCU. The Battle of the Books Committee chooses a selection of books for each grade level/range to read over the course of the year, and in May teams compete in a three round quiz game answering questions about the books to determine who knows the books best!
🎯 Purpose of the Team
-
To encourage a love of reading through a fun, competitive format
-
To expose students to a wide variety of books, authors, and genres
-
To help students practice comprehension, recall, and critical‑thinking skills
-

-
To strengthen students’ confidence as they share what they know and contribute to a team effort
🌟 Why It Matters
Students who participate in Battle of the Books often discover new favorite books, grow as readers, and feel proud of their accomplishments. The team creates a welcoming space where every reader has something valuable to contribute, and where reading becomes an adventure shared with friends.
